The sky was cloudless. There was a gentle sea breeze. A Coast Guard patrol boat sounded its horn from across the water.

We were sitting on the railing. Far in the distance, we could see slow traffic on the Benjamin Sheares bridge. Where we were, it was deserted except for another couple sitting a few hundred metres away, and a group of fellow bikers. Our bikes were resting against the railing next to us.

A few minutes later, we saw the fireworks over the water, in the distance. Flashing jets of light, turning green and purple and red all at once. Small little sparks that grew bigger and bigger and bigger until they filled the entire sky.

I felt a sense of achievement. I had never cycled so much in my life.

Happy National Day, everyone. Where were you, on the night of the fireworks?

Have you caught I, Robot? It reminds me of George Orwell's Animal Farm, only that instead of pigs, it's robots.

Humans keep dreaming up stories about other species trying to dominate them. Personally, I think it stems from an insecurity complex. Somehow, even with all that we have achieved as the dominant species, deep down there is still fear that a better species is out there.

Remind me to tell you about The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell.
